Google vs. China
Does anyone have the same gut feeling as I do that Google has been planning this "attack" on the Chinese government all along?
Did you really not anticipate this day of "revolting against the Chinese government" would occur when Google reluctantly agreed to "the great firewall of China" in 2006?
I think one would be highly underestimating Google if one only thinks of it as a multi-billion profit generating internet company. Sergey and Larry aren't just entrepreneurs. They were, are, have always been revolutionists. They revolutionize the way we use the internet; the way we do advertising and marketing; the way we communicate with each other; practically, the way we live our lives. Just think about the daily routines of our lives 10 years ago (for those of you that are old enough to still remember), flash forward and imagine our daily routines now. Gmail, anyone? "Googling" how to fix, make, check, find, do something? If you are part of this new hip age of social media, you won't be further than 2 degrees away from Google if not 1st. Impressive, isn't it?
So now with its huge success in the Western world, Google's next big mission is to revolutionize the Chinese communistic culture, which btw is a rather BOLD ambition. We are best known for our stern stubbornness, close-minded thinking and adherent to traditional virtues. I, for one, will admit to all of the above traits.
Google has been waiting for the right moment to wage its war. I have been wondering what sparked it to make a move now. I mean, really, Chinese cyber spies and hackers aren't news. They have always been there. They probably started hacking Google since day 1 it founded a location in China. Something must have happened that ignited Google to move its queen next to the enemy's king.
Well, whatever it is I applaud immensely for Google's gutsy effort, even though, I must say, in the end everything will just go back to the way it was (i.e. Google staying in China and putting the filtering back up). Come on, let's be real. There is no way the Chinese government would be threatened by a US company claiming only 30%, at best, of its population and neither would Google exit a market triple the size of the US.
As much as it being a stalemate afterall, we should be glad an institution as wealthy and established as Google still cares enough about the world to make a political statement. With the whole financial crisis revealing the greediness of humanity, I almost lose hope in believing people with power still cares about values outside of money. See, here goes the "adherent to traditional virtues" quirk. O how more "Chinese" can I be?
